(Jesus Christ Is Your Mercy Seat)
TO THE BIBLE: Romans 3:23-25
“All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God set forth as a propitiation by His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance God had passed over the sins that were previously committed”
LET’S TALK
“Oh, my days! Jane, what’s wrong with your wrists? Why do you have so many cuts and slashes?” Monica screamed.
“I told a lie to someone, and it kept on haunting me afterwards. I’d heard somewhere that when you sin, you’re supposed to be punished for your sins. So, I did it to myself,” Jane said, pulling down her sleeves to cover her wrists.
“No, you didn’t have to do that. Jesus was already punished for the whole world, including you: His body was bruised, battered, and brutally sacrificed as the full penalty for your sins. Please, don’t do this anymore!” Monica pleaded.
“Could you tell me more about this Jesus?” Jane asked, and Monica went on to share the Gospel with her.
Some people, like Jane, try all kinds of self-infliction or rituals, trying to pay for their sins by their own blood or some other way of suffering. If this has been your journey or experience, stop immediately!
It’s futile because Jesus paid fully for you, so stop hurting yourself in an attempt to atone for your sins. He was set forth to be the complete appeasement for your sins.
The Greek word translated “propitiation” in our opening verse is “hilasterion,” and it means the place of mercy, or “Mercy Seat.” In the Old Testament, the Mercy Seat was the covering of the ark of God.
He met the High Priest there, and His presence was upon the Mercy Seat. But today, Jesus Christ is God’s place of mercy for us; He’s the Mercy Seat, the medium of expiation.
Jesus was born for this purpose so that God would declare His own righteousness for letting sinners go free. You have a permanent mercy seat—Christ Jesus!
He offered Himself as a perfect sacrifice for all time and eternity, such that there’ll be no more remembrance of sins. This is the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Receive it for yourself, and preach it to those in your world. Praise God!
